There’s a compounding effect here that’s easy to miss. When the cost of sending an instruction drops to nearly zero, more instructions get sent. Things that wouldn’t have been worth opening a terminal for suddenly become trivial to delegate. “Summarise yesterday’s changes across all client projects.” “Draft a reply to that prospect email.” “Check if the new blog post is indexed yet.” Each one takes five seconds to type. Each one would have taken five minutes of context-switching in a terminal. Over a day, that’s dozens of micro-delegations that simply wouldn’t happen through a single channel.

How does email work as an agent interface?

Email as an agent channel does something terminal and Telegram can’t.

The architecture: the agent sends emails flagging things that need action. The operator replies. The agent processes the reply the same way it would process a terminal instruction. Forwarding works too - a client sends something, it gets forwarded to the agent, and the agent handles the processing.

Email is fundamentally different from terminal or Telegram because it’s asynchronous and document-native. Attachments arrive naturally. Threads provide context. The inbox itself becomes a task queue.

Think about how most businesses already work. Emails arrive. Each one represents a task or a decision. They get processed one by one. Now make the processor an AI agent instead of a human. The emails still arrive. But instead of reading each one, context-switching, opening the relevant tool, doing the work, and replying - there’s a forward, and the agent handles it.

Email is the original asynchronous task management system. Turning it into an agent input channel is a natural extension of how inboxes already work.

The attachment handling is the part that surprises people most. Someone sends a PDF, a spreadsheet, a screenshot. Previously that meant downloading, opening, reading, deciding what to do, then doing it. With an email agent channel, it means forwarding. The agent extracts what matters, processes it, and either acts on it or summarises it back with a recommendation. The human work collapses from “process this document” to “approve this action.”

Google Workspace makes this particularly clean. Gmail threads maintain context. The agent can reference earlier messages in the thread. It’s not starting from scratch every time - it knows what was discussed, what was decided, what’s still pending. That threading is something terminal and Telegram don’t provide naturally.

How do you manage multiple AI agents across channels?

The skill is in the routing. Knowing which channel to use for which type of work. Getting that wrong means either over-engineering simple tasks in the terminal or trying to do complex work through a chat interface that can’t handle it.

Routing instinct develops through running multi-channel operations and paying attention to what works. After a few weeks it becomes automatic - the same way nobody thinks about whether to call or text someone anymore. The decision just happens.

What about Discord and Slack as agent channels?

Discord makes sense for team-based agent interaction. Multiple people sending tasks to a shared agent through different channels within a server. Channel separation gives you natural task categorisation - a #seo channel for SEO tasks, a #content channel for writing. The agent routes based on which channel the message came from.

Slack is the enterprise version of the same idea. If a team already lives in Slack, adding an agent bot means zero adoption friction. Nobody needs to install a new app or learn a new interface. They message the bot the same way they’d message a colleague. The agent becomes a team member that happens to be available 24 hours a day and never calls in sick.

The principle is the same regardless of platform: meet users where they already are. The best channel for AI agent management is whichever one the operator or team already uses most naturally. Forcing people into a new interface to interact with agents is fighting human behaviour, and human behaviour always wins.

What is the Hermes agent and why does it matter?

Claude Code with Opus as the main brain handles the heavy thinking. That’s not changing. That’s where the real value sits.

Hermes agent is a different kind of interesting. Its self-learning system - the ability to build up knowledge over time and adapt behaviour based on accumulated experience rather than starting fresh every session - is a genuinely useful architectural idea, separate from whatever model powers it.

Hermes also creates a sandbox for testing open-source AI models (free alternatives to commercial ones like Opus) in agent contexts without touching the production system. Qwen 3.6 has been solid for specific tasks. MiniMax 2.7 is interesting for its efficiency characteristics. Gemma 4 just dropped and the early results are worth paying attention to.

None of these replace Opus as the main brain. That would be insane. But for specific smaller tasks, routing decisions, or experimental workflows, having a layer where different models can be swapped and tested without risking the live system is genuinely valuable.

The open-source AI model space is moving fast enough that ignoring it entirely is a mistake. Not because any single model is going to dethrone Opus tomorrow. Because understanding what smaller models can and can’t do informs how you architect your entire agent system. Knowing that Qwen 3.6 handles classification well but falls apart on multi-step reasoning means routing appropriately. Knowing that Gemma 4 has strong instruction-following but weaker creative output means deploying it where those strengths matter.

Worth noting: the open-source models are improving at a rate that would have seemed delusional eighteen months ago. Qwen went from an afterthought to genuinely useful in specific contexts. Gemma 4 is competitive with models twice its size on certain benchmarks. MiniMax 2.7 is doing things with efficiency that suggest the gap between open and closed models is narrowing for everything except the hardest reasoning tasks. None of this changes the calculus for the primary brain today. But it’s the kind of shift an agent operator needs to track because the landscape shifts quarterly and yesterday’s setup decision might need revisiting.

What about OpenClaw and other agent platforms?

There’s already a detailed breakdown of why you don’t need OpenClaw. The short version hasn’t changed: platforms add coordination complexity that most businesses don’t need. Claude Code is the execution engine. Markdown files are the agent definitions. Channels are whatever gets the instruction to the agent fastest.

Hermes is different from OpenClaw in an important way. OpenClaw is a platform trying to be the whole stack. Hermes is a layer that sits on top of what already works. That distinction matters. Hermes doesn’t replace Claude Code. It creates an experimentation space that can feed ideas back into the primary system.

The default position remains: use the best model, add the lightest structure, avoid platforms that want to own the stack. But “lightest structure” can include an experimentation layer for anyone disciplined enough to keep it separate from production.

Mornings start on Telegram. Anything agents flagged overnight gets reviewed. Approvals and rejections go back. Quick instructions set the morning’s priorities. Ten minutes from a phone, no desk required.

What channels can you use for AI agent management?

Any channel that can send a text instruction and receive a text response works as an agent interface. Messaging apps are best for quick instructions and status checks. Email is best for asynchronous document processing and task queues. The key is matching the channel to the work type.
